I am often asked what a parent and student should do to prepare to study abroad. The answer is not a simple one. In fact, it takes three or four years of going to high school for a student to understand what is required. But, I can offer some things that parents and students should do and should not do as advice for starting the journey to study in America or other English-speaking countries.

  My advice to parents is:

Do unlock the imagination by involving a child in activity that IS NOT school related like music, sports, art, or travel.

Do make your child read English news, books, and magazines every day and keep a written journal of what he/she learned. Remember, reading unlocks language and the more one reads the better the language skills.

Do ask your child the six critical questions that foster curiosity and creativity: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Or How? When a child is forced to think about and answer these questions, they become better thinkers.

Do focus more on learning and the learning process while you worry about grades and test scores like TOEFL and SAT that are important too.

Do understand that while grades are important, things like commitment, effort, dedication, persistence, and learning how to learn are what colleges and universities look for in an applicant.

Do not just focus on content (what is being learned). Western colleges and universities demand that students comprehend concepts (ideas) and competencies (how things are done correctly) more than knowing the correct answer on an exam.

Do not do everything for your child. Your child must learn how to be proactive and engaged if he/she will succeed in college or university. Your child will be 8000 to 12000 kilometers away from your help, so, they must learn “to do” for themselves.

  My advice to students is:

Do begin the process of asking and answering three questions:

Can I? Do I have the ability and what it takes to meet the demands required to be a top student?

Should I? Is it the right thing to do for me not take the Gaokao and prepare to study abroad?

Will I? Am I willing to engage my heart, mind, and spirit in the process of building my dream?

If you do not answer yes to all three questions, then maybe studying abroad is not for you.

Do know yourself very well. How can you choose where you will study and what you will study if you do not know who and what you are?

Do define your dream. If you cannot express your dream in words, sentences, and paragraphs then you may not really have a dream.

Do become fully literate in math, science, art, the humanities, the social sciences, physical education, and … yes, English so that you develop English as a language of thinking, expression, and feeling.

Do learn something new every day that you can express orally or in written form.

Do believe in the Chinese idea of Ying-Yang–or balance. You should be much more than merely a student. You should be learning, doing, exploring, expanding your heart and mind, and becoming the well-rounded person that every college or university wants to admit.

Do understand that you are truly the only person who has the power to change your world and build your dream. We have a saying in America: “People do not get what they deserve, they get what they earn.” Earn your dream through hard work and dedication.

Do not let others define success for you.

Do not let others define your dream for you.

Do not be defined by a number, or a grade, or any metric that limits your future.

Do not give up and do not let the difficulties that you will face make you quit or do less than your very best.

I hope these tips help you as you begin the first steps on your journey to study abroad. I hope each of you dreams a big dream and then uses education as the tool to build it.
